Wings: A Journey Through Hietasalo Island

I had been working with the theme of “wings” for some time. The first set of photographs featuring wings was taken in the summer of 2014 on Hietasalo Island. I had sewn a T-shirt with small wings for my daughter, Ruusu, to wear while she played. She explored the island in her wings shirt as I captured photographs of her. We had visited Ruusu’s godmother, Taina Kontio, a close friend and visual artist, during our summer holidays. Hietasalo Island was an almost magical place in the archipelago near the city of Kuopio. These photographs ultimately formed an installation for “Näkyjä” (Visions), an urban art exhibition in Kuopio that ran from December 30, 2014, to January 25, 2015. The exhibition was organized by Valmed, a media artists’ association in the Kuopio region. As part of the installation, we had held a storytelling workshop where children in the playground could share stories related to the images and remember the lush greenery of summer.
