The joint exhibition Reflections – mirroring structures and complexities in pluriversal art-based dialogues with the youth is connected to the SEEYouth international research and development project implemented in 2020-2021. The exhibition presents encounters and transatlantic collaboration with young people in the form of photographs, installations, and videos. The exhibition features works from Finland and Brazil. The exhibition features collections of works that deal with the main theme of the project – mirroring from different perspectives. Mirroring is social, environmental, cultural, and visual, and is more than learning from others. In the joint process, something new is produced, and we move towards transboundary polyphonicity, where the hidden and marginalized are brought to light. The works make visible the collaboration between the young people involved and the researchers and experts, describing, among other things, working with art-based methods in the workshops organized in 2020-2021 in Finland. The exhibition features an installation built by young people, which consists of materials created in the workshops. Photographs taken by Mikko Ylisuvanto, Katri Konttinen, and Mosi Herati from 2020-2021 are also on display. Photographer Mosi Herat’s documentary video work, SEEYouth: Strengthening the inclusion of young people through art and social work, describes workshop work in southern Finland in May 2021. Satu Miettinen’s photo series My reflection, another’s reflection reflects on seeing and photographing oneself and others. How do we see young people and how do young people see us? What do we want others to see? The young people who participated and the workshop instructors and researchers appear in the portraits. In Mari Riikonen’s photo work, the world tree supports the network that connects us. A tree is a metaphor and structure of living nature and the whole world. Nowadays, a large part of the encounters takes place via the network – ones and zeros. The living and breathing meet the inanimate and neutral while both enabling and excluding.
